Lovelock Cave, Near Lovelock, Nevada

The town of Lovelock is located on Interstate 80 about an hour northeast of Fernley, or an hour north of Fallon. The town of Lovelock has the usual Interstate amenities- gas, food, lodging. It has a nice downtown area and a couple of clean parks. There is a driving tour of the town and the valley on the way to Lovelock cave, with the cave being the final destination on the tour. The cave is about a half hour drive from town. Brochures are available at the Marzen House Museum, just off the highway at Exit 106, at the west end of town. There is a kiosk in front of the museum with brochures and maps if the museum is closed.

Lovelock cave was occupied at various times throughout prehistory, most extensively between 2000 B.C. and 1000 A.D., during what is known as the Lovelock period. The first excavations were done at the cave in 1912.

There are many other associated sites in the area, most notably Leonard's Rock Shelter, which is along the drive to Lovelock Cave.
