Hickison Petroglyph Site

The Hickison Petroglyph Recreation Area is located on Highway 50 about 20 miles east of the town of Austin right at Hickison Summit. The site has covered picnic tables, toilets and a campground. The site offers a self-guided tour, with brochures available at the parking area. The petroglyphs at the Hickison site date to somewhere between 11,000 and 12,000 years ago. They are classified as Great Basin Curvilinear in style, like those found at Grimes Point near the town of Fallon.

The Battle Mountain BLM field office has jurisdiction over the site. Their phone number is 702-635-4000.

The photo above shows and example of the Great Basin Curvilinear style of petroglyphs found at the Hickison site. The circular part of the glyphs are pecked in the rock, while the lines extending down appear to be incised. These petroglyphs may be archaic representations of humans.

This photo shows another panel form the Hickison site. The triangular petroglyph in the upper left of the panel may represent an anthropomorphic form. The Petroglyph below it is thought to represent the human female.
