Lookout Canyon Dayhike- Cedar Mesa, Utah

Lookout Canyon is an unnamed, unmarked canyon on the southern edge of Cedar Mesa. Lookout Canyon is the adopted name, given to the canyon because it is on the way to the road's end at Lookout Point. We have heard the name Lookout Canyon used by more than one person and have decided that it is appropriate and acceptable.

Access to the trailhead and camping with great, open views is off of highway 261. Turn west onto road heading towards Slickhorn Canyons. This road eventually turns to the south just past the turn for Government Trail. Stay left when you see the sign for Government Trail, which takes you north. Pass by all the trailheads for Slickhorn Canyon hikes. After passing last trailhead, where there is an old Hogan, you will emerge from the trees and cross a pasture. You will see a corral to your right, to the west. Continue on and you will head into trees again. Finally you will have to slow down for exposed slickrock. The road gets a bit harder to see here, but if you look out in front of you, it will become visible. As soon as you see the slickrock you will immediately see the north fork of the canyon. Pass by this, it is the south fork where you will enter, just up ahead. To your left you will see a couple of old truck beds, orange in color, one of them pretty well decayed. This is the trailhead sign. Just past the truck beds about 25 meters or so on your right you will see the canyon rim. You will see mostly pines trees, with a lone cottonwood of light green standing out. This is where you enter the canyon.

archaic human forms

Photo of petroglyphs to the left appear to be flower-like images on long stems. They may be an archaic representation of human forms? Found in Lookout Canyon.
