Kane Gulch Ranger Station to Grand Gulch
to Toadie Canyon Trailhead

This loop is best done with two vehicles, but it can be done solo if you do not mind a road walk back to Kane Gulch Ranger Station. The road walk is really not that bad, it is only about 5 miles, or 8 kilometers. You could stash your pack near the Toadie Canyon trailhead and carry only water on the walk making it a bit easier. The walk from Kane Gulch Ranger Station to Toadie Canyon Trailhead is about 9 miles, or 15 kilometers.

We did this hike as an overnight in June of 2003. We camped just up Toadie Canyon where there is a clear, running spring that bubbles out of the slickrock in the canyon bottom. When you find the spring, look up at the north wall of the canyon. There is a nice ruin high up on the ledge.

The climb out of of Toadie Canyon can be tricky. You may walk past the exit route; it is easy to do if you are enjoying the scenery. You will not walk too far past it though as you will eventually come to an impassable pouroff. The exit will be on the south side of the canyon, on your right as you approach from downcanyon. The route out is up a steep, rocky slope. You might see cairns, and you will see the trail out if you look closely. Once on the mesatop you will be on slickrock for much of the short walk to the trailhead. Look for cairns on the slickrock and a footpath across the dirt to guide you. The route is generally to the east/southeast.

The 1:24,000 mapsheets for this hike are Kane Gulch and Cedar Mesa North.
