Fish and Owl Canyons Backpack Loop,
Cedar Mesa, Utah

Not much needs to be said here. This is one of the more popular backpack loops on Cedar Mesa, possibly in southeast Utah. There is unlimited information available on this hike. The trailhead is easily accessible and very near the Kane Gulch Ranger Station. The access road, Road 253, is about 2 kilometers south of the ranger station. Spike and I did this trip in four days in September, 2002. There was plenty of water in the upper reaches of the canyons, not much at all, at least initially, in the lower reaches. We made a base camp at the confluence of the two canyons where we spent two nights, and hiked further down into Fish Creek beyond the confluence with McLoyds Canyon. We did the trip clockwise, entering into Fish Canyon and coming out Owl Canyon. We had a very interesting trip being caught in monsoon rains two days in a row, the second day resulting in the previously dry canyon bottom becoming a class three flow in places.

Two 1:24,000 mapsheets are needed for the hike- Snow Flat Spring Cave and Bluff, NW.
